Needed Reminders

2 Peter 1:10-15

INTRODUCTION: Due to postmodern thinking, sound doctrine has taken a back seat to many other things.  2 Pet. 3:17 emphasizes the need for believers to be firmly grounded in the essential truths of the gospel, so that we don’t fall prey to false teachers. Models 4 characteristics of SOUND TEACHERS:

I. THEY ARE ALWAYS READY TO REMIND US OF WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW, vs. 12-13, 15. Repetition is a key to learning. Have you ever noticed how often the Bible repeats the truth? Deut. 5-Ex. 20.  Phil. 3:1; 4:4. We need frequent reminders of basic spiritual truths that we already know, so that we don’t drift off course.

II. THEY EMPHASIZE THE BASIC TRUTHS OF THE BIBLE, vs. 12. The instant we are born again, God gives us everything pertaining to life & godliness through the knowledge of Christ, who calls us by His own glory & excellence. However, we need to preach the gospel to ourselves every day.

III. THEY ARE IN EARNEST BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT LIFE IS SHORT, SO THEY USE THEIR TIME TO SERVE THE LORD, vss.13-14. John 21:18-19.  3 important lessons about life & death. BECAUSE LIFE IS SHORT:

A. Live as a Pilgrim, Focused on the Things that are Eternal, 1 Pet. 1:1, 17; 2:11. Heaven is our permanent home, 2 Cor. 4:16-18.

B. Cultivate a Biblical View of Death, 2 Cor. 5:8. Death is a departure or exodus from the slavery of this body of sin to a glorious eternity with the Lord.

C. We must Use our Remaining Time on Earth to Serve the Lord, vs. 15.

IV. THEY ARE DILIGENT TO AWAKEN OTHERS TO REMEMBER THE ESSENTIAL TRUTHS THAT WILL GUIDE THEM ALWAYS, vs. 13. “Stir up” =to arouse or awaken from sleep. We can leave the legacy of a godly example so that when others think of us, they will be drawn to our Savior and Lord.

INVITATION: No matter where you’re at in the Lord, you need to be reminded often of the basic truths of the faith so that you stay on course. Encourage you to do several things: (1) Read the Bible through over and over. (2) Memorize key portions of the Bible. (3) Regularly sit under the faithful ministry of the Word. I’m just reminding you of what you already know! What kind of legacy do you want to leave your children and others?
