A Gloomy Picture/Avoiding False Teaching

2 Peter 2 10b-22

INTRODUCTION: Salvation results in a life of obedience to God, Titus 2:11-14. One of the main errors of the false teachers was to deny the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. If Christ isn’t coming, there is no need to live in light of future judgment. The warning is against any teaching that encourages us to tolerate sin. KNOW:

I. THEIR SHOCKING CHARACTISTICS: False Teachers Are Full of:  2:10b-16.

A.  ARROGANCE & DEFIANCE, vss. 10b-11. Jude 9; John 12:31. We do not need to fear the devil, but we should respect his power. Acts 19:13-16.

B. LUST & GREED, vss. 12-16. Gal. 6:7-8; Eph. 5:3; Col. 3:5.

II. THEIR DECPTIVE METHODS, vss. 17-19. Beware of any teaching that appeals to your fleshly desires, outside of the boundaries that God has prescribed for proper enjoyment.

III. THEIR PITIFUL STATE, vss. 20-22. Prov. 26:11. 2 questions: First, what does Peter mean when he says that their latter state is worse than the first? Matt. 12:43-45; Luke 12:47-48. Second, is Peter saying that believers can lose their salvation? The simple answer is, No! Phil. 1:6; John 6:39-40; 10:28. The real question is, “What is true saving faith?” Genuine saving faith always results in a life of growing godliness and obedience to Christ.

INVITATION: Why has Peter expended so much powder & shot on false teachers in this chapter? Because he is primarily a pastor. He is concerned to feed his Master’s sheep, John 21:15-17; 1 Pet. 5:1ff, & he is furious to find them being poisoned by lust masquerading as faith. Study this portrait carefully! Your eternal destiny may well depend on it!
